All Bets Are On O'Malley
The Associated Press is reporting that the state's horse racing industry is hoping that Governor-Elect Martin O'Malley(D) has better luck getting slots through than Governor Robert Ehrlich(R). This is more of the pressure building that is facing the incoming Governor. The AP article appeared in this afternoon's edition of The Capital.
Prince George's County: Nominee Stalled And New Issue Is Raised
The Prince George's County Council has put a roadblock on a nominee that County Executive Jack Johnson(D) wants for the Office of Management and Budget. Councilwoman Camille Exum(D) tells The Washington Examiner that they can no longer tolerate the appointment of top officials who live outside of the county. Johnson's choice to run the Office of Management and Budget Jonathan Seeman, lives in Silver Spring. The Examiner has put a Freedom of Information Act request to see how many of the county's top officials live in other jurisdictions.
O'Malley: More State Offices To Prince George's County
Governor-Elect Martin O'Malley(D) has promised to move more state offices to the Capital Region via Prince George's County. A similar promise that outgoing Governor Robert Ehrlich(R) has made. The Washington Examiner says that O'Malley might have a similar fight on his hands that Ehrlich had when he tried to move the state Department of Planning to Largo.
Anne Arundel County: Democrats Might Challenge
Just a brief recap to the results of Friday's final tally, in District 30, Ron George(R) bested out Barbara Samorajczyk(D) by 53 votes. In District 31, Don Dwyer(R) beat Democrat Joan Cadden(D) by 28 votes. These were two bright spots in the election for the GOP. The Baltimore Examiner is reporting that the Democrats are considering challenging the counts.
After Free Vote 2006....
From Public Radio Delmarva|WSDL (90.7FM): "...Democrats overwhelmed the state's Republicans in what the GOP had hoped would be a good year for its incumbent Governor Robert Ehrlich and a good Senatorial prospect in Lt. Gov. Michael Steele." (EDITOR'S NOTE: THE LINK GOES DIRECTLY TO MP3 FROM PUBLIC RADIO DELMARVA'S WEBSITE)
 The Pressure Is On Mfume
He has denied that he was running several times over the radio, most recently on WYPR (88.1FM). But The Baltimore Sun looks at Mfume's chances, and points out that his words are being picked carefully.
Howard County: West County Dems Are Hopeful
Despite the fact that the GOP won all three legislative seats and the County Council race in Wastern Howard County, The Sun says that Democrats there are hopfule that they can make inroads.
Slots Still A Tough Sell
Whether he likes talking about it or not, Governor-elect Martin O'Malley(D) might need slots to fulfill ambitious campaign promises, so says The Sun which is reporting along with the promises, neighboring states and pro-slots lobbyists are causing the drum to beat loudly. O'Malley says that he would use slots at race tracks to preserve the industry and to save Preakness. Keep in mind that most of the Prince George's Delegation are opposed to slots, and late in October, House Speaker Michael Busch(D) said that it would not matter if it was Ehrlich or O'Malley in office, he would still be opposed (read more...)
Wicomico County: Shea To Stay
Wicomico County Administrator Theodore "Ted" Shea III has been asked to stay on through July by County Executive-elect Rick Pollitt(D). Pollitt tells The Daily Times that it would not be in the best interest of the county to hire a new administrator during this time as they start a new form of government. Shea had announced that he would be retiring on July 1.
Wicomico County: Agreeing To Disagree
The Wicomico County Council has ended an era as a new form of government starts to take whole. The Daily Times says that the new freshman council will not only oversee legislation, but serve as a check and balance for the first ever County Executive, Rick Pollitt(D). The old council talks about their successes or lack their of....depending on who you ask. The outgoing board also leaves many unresolved issues.
Ehrlich To Stay In Annapolis
When Governor Robert Ehrlich(R) leaves office this January, he will not be traveling far from state circle. Ehrlich has purchased a home near the Westfield Annapolis Mall. More from The Examiner which also is reporting that he has yet released his future plans.
