Speechless and Tight
The race as of this post is too close to call in the race for Comptroller. Peter Franchot looks like he is leading. One thing that is for sure, William Donald Shaefer has been unseated. The Baltimore Sun reported that Shaefer conceded defeat at a midday press conference. This is the first time Shaefer has ever lost a re-election bid in his six decade political career,

Vovak Update
Republican Candidate for U.S. Senate Daniel Vovak....heh...Daniel "The Wigman" Vovak announced that he will file his appeal at 4:00 this afternoon, not the previously announced 1:00pm which we reported on this blog yesterday. Based on the time this was written, all of Vovak's paper should be in order to file his appeal against the State Board of Elections to have his full nickname on the ballot for the primary on September 12.....tomorrow.

See yesterday's entry for more information on the appeal.

Times For More Endorsements
The Wahsington Times have released their endorsements for Maryland...but reading the piece, it sounds like they have their mind made up already for November.

The first half of the article has their endorsement for elections in DC. Maryland is the second half.

Commissioner Candidate Screams Slander
The Baltimore Examiner is reporting that a candidate running for Carroll County Commissioner is accusing a Caroll County Paper of slander in its recently distributed first printed edition.

He was 72. A Republican, Mr. Rappaport ran for Attorney General in 1998 and then against Paul Sarbanes for the U.S. Senate seat in 2000.

Details from The Baltimore Examiner.

Capital Endorsements
The Capital published it's list of endorsements. Among the is Ben Cardin, Janet Ownes and George Johnson, Anne Arundel County Sheriff who is running forCounty Executive.

Screw The Primary...
The Baltimore Sun is reporting that nearly half-million free state voters shun the primary process. Many are awaiting for the November election.

Cardin And Mfume Keeps It Civil
Despite that Congressman Ben Cardin and former Congressman and NAACP President Kweisi Mfume have been in direct competition with each other, these two have kept it surprisingly civil towards each other. This must be because of their friendship that goes back to when the two both entered congress together in 1987. Mfume was moving up from the Baltimore City Council while Cardin was moving up from the House of Delegates representing Baltimore County.

The Baltimore Sun takes a look....

Quiet and Hidden Gets The Endorsement
In case you couldn't hear the barbs between William Donald Schaefer and Janet Owens, both The Washington Post and The Baltimore Sun have endorsed Montgomery County Delegate Peter Franchot for Comptroller.

The story from WMDT Salisbury.

Ivey's Hand Was Forced
WUSA-TV (Channel 9) is reporting that the exclusion of Jolene Ivey from County Executive Jack Johnson's sample ballot forced the hand of Glenn Ivey to endorse former Delegate Rushern Baker for Prince George's County Executive (see below.)

Jolene Ivey is the wife of the State's Attorney who is running for the Maryland House of Delegates in the 47th District. The 47th is the Northwestern section of Prince George's that includes my hometown of Adelphi.

All Eyes on the 3rd Congressional District
An area that includes parts of Baltimore City and County, Eastern Howard County and Western Anne Arundel County. It is also one of the most affluent districts in the state.

With current Congressman Ben Cardin running for the U.S. Senate, 16 candidates are now vying for the seat. Cardin has represented this district for two decades.

The Washington Post has more on this horse race.

The Changing Political Landscape in Maryland

Know Your Candidates
Patuxent Publishing Company has a website that lists candidates running in Baltimore and the western part of Central Maryland. The lists includes statewide and local positions.

Baltimore Candidates (City and County)

Carroll County Candidates

Howard County Candidates

A River Between Them...The Wicomico Variety
The Salisbury Daily-Times says that the two democrats vying for the party's nomination for Wicomico County Executive are on opposite sides of the liberal spectrum.

The paper is also reporting you have three republican heavyweights. More...

It Comes Down To Fashion
The Capital says that the comptrollers race has came to who has a better fashion sense. Remember there are three people running for the position. Incumbent Former Governor and Baltimore Mayor William Donald Schaefer, Anne Arundel County Executive Janet Owens and Montgomery County Delegate Peter Franchot, who has been watching from a far at this point. Especially since Schaefer has been insulting Owens.

No Competition In Two Carroll County Races
No one is running against the incumbent Sheriff and State's Attorney in Carroll County.

More from The Baltimore Sun

Possibly A New Face Of Government
I was looking at who was running for office in Prince George's County recently and discovered that this election could possibly set up a whole new county government with many on the County Council facing either hotly contested seats or term limits, never mind that the County Executive seat will be virtually decided after this Tuesday (There are no Republicans running for the position this year.)

In this morning's Baltimore Sun, Howard County is facing a similar situation, and it could posisbly have an impact on the General Assembly Delegation.

Not Giving Up...No Matter What
Despite the fact that our primary in the free state is less than 48 hours away, Republican Candidate for the U.S. Senate Daniel "Wig Man" Vovak....excuse us, Daniel "The Wig Man" Vovak, is appealing the decision of two judges who said that it was too late for ballots to be changed. The ballots simply states "Wig Man" instead of "The Wig Man."

Vovak on his website announced that he would be filing the appeal sometime around 1:00p.m. tomorrow afternoon at Anne Arundel County Circuit Court in Annapolis. Vovak stated that he will file an appeal the the Maryland Court of Appeals, Maryland Court of Speacial Appeals and the U.S. District Court in Baltimore.
